Classwork: Persona & Brand Identity

Here is my mind map about persona and brand identity for our star in component 3. This was made my Tisha, Kimora and I (Cassie). The blog itself was done by me (Cassie).

REFLECTION:
My main role in this classwork was making the mind map. I usually either prepare the words that will be going into the mind map, or actually writing and drawing on the paper. Making the mind map about my artist’s persona and brand identity helped me clearly understand who my artist is and how they should be presented. It was useful because I could organize my ideas about the artist’s personality, style, and image in one place. This made it easier to keep my music video consistent and made sure the artist has a clear identity. The main problem I had was putting in too many ideas that didn’t fully match each other. Since the artist is made up, I added things I liked without thinking about whether they all worked together. This made the artist’s persona a bit confusing at first. To solve this, I chose only the most important ideas and removed the ones that didn’t fit the artist’s main image. I grouped similar ideas together so the brand identity was clearer and more focused. This helped me create an artist that feels more realistic and easy for the audience to understand. Next time, I would look at more real artists (since I only researched a few in detail) before making the mind map so I can plan the persona better from the start and avoid adding ideas that don’t fit.

Classwork: Persona

Here's my classwork on persona for component 3. This was done together as a group, but I (Cassie) did the majority.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
This classwork was actually alot of fun, as we got to construct the identity and persona, both on-screen and off-screen of our artist. I had already discussed with my group about how our artist will present themselves in the music video and out the music video. The work done in this classwork presents our original plan perfectly. Since this was a group work, it was really not a hassle at all and everyone mostly finished their parts almost immediately except me. I faced this problem because I was in charge of the parts that talked about our plan for our artist. While I knew what we wanted for our artist since we discussed it before, I really was lacking inspiration. I couldn’t really find an artist that matches my vision exactly, which frustrated me. The way I solved this was I asked my friends outside of media studies what artists would match with my concept. Since my other friends had more knowledge on certain artists while having an unbiased view (since they did not know who our actor was), they provided me with public figures I could take inspiration from that I wasn’t aware of before. Next time, I’d like to get opinions from a non-media student perspective again, not only for personal classwork but also other blogs, as they provide useful information.

Storyboard + Lyric Sheet

This is the storyboard and lyric sheet for component 3 which we will use when filming. This blog was done by Tisha, but I helped in giving ideas for the scenes, what technical elements to use, and what platform to create the lyric sheet on. I also highlighted/bolded information to make things easier to read, as well as put my own style on the blog.

.đ–„” ݁ ˖ Storyboard + Lyric Sheet .☘︎ ݁˖

What is a storyboard?
A storyboard is used to plan how visuals will appear within a media product. It is especially important for this project because music videos often rely on a clear storyline to convey meaning. Creating a storyboard helps to organize the plot line and allows the audience to understand the message and feeling that is being shown more effectively.

I have created several storyboards in the past, including one for my previous documentary project, which can be found here:
https://tisha-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/2025/08/storyboard.html

DRAFT IDEA

Before I start on making the storyboard, me and my team decided to sit together while listening to the whole song to understand how the mood will change throughout the song.

After this discussion, we decided to start creating a simple plotline that will happen in several places as we are planning to show dates from the couple. In which this is the final draft that I focus on to create the storyboard from.

LYRIC SHEET IDEA

As music videos create their story / visuals that they want to show not in order, this would mean that creating a storyboard for this project would be different from my previous storyboard that I have made. So we decided to plan the whole music video based on the lyrics of the song.
Lyric Sheet by Jyotisha

After this discussion, we decided to start creating a simple plot line that will happen in several places as we are planning to show dates from the couple. In which this is the final draft that I focus on to create the storyboard from.

From this lyric sheet planning, we can see how the draft ideas started to come to life by arranging them to fit the song lyrics, which eventually developed into a full plot line. Making this lyric sheet was very useful because it allowed different scenes to be planned even if they were not in order. It would have been difficult to draw scenes that jump between different moments without following a clear sequence, so the lyric sheet was extremely helpful.

This process in creating the lyric sheet made the overall idea of the music video become easier as I could experiment with how each scene connects to the meaning of the lyrics.

To create an even deeper understanding of the lyric sheet me and my team decided to create a whiteboard. This whiteboard purpose is to add visuals like photographs and videos that matches the idea from the planning inside the lyric sheets.

ONLINE STORYBOARD

As my previous storyboard was hand-drawn, I decided to explore other methods to create a clearer and more easily visualized storyboard. That’s when I found an online application called ShotStager, which allowed me to present my ideas in a more organized and professional way. The platform includes useful features such as simple scene layouts and camera movement previews, which helped me understand how each shot would look in the final music video.

Here is how the ShotStager interface appears:

As you can see, this version is much more complete and the process of creating a digital storyboard was very effective and I enjoyed working with it. The digital tools like the marker to draw the simple location and the camera movement and character placement helped me visualize the camera movement and camera angles that I have used in the scene which strengthened my overall planning.

Here is the final online storyboard I developed in the application ShotStager. I included the song in the background to help create a clearer sense of the mood and pace that the music video will follow.

FINAL STORYBOARD

Even though making the online storyboard was very useful with all the features, there are limitations like how the location and props look like in the scene. So I decided to also hand-drawn the storyboard as it allows a more in depth visuals of the storyline and plot but only the visual and not how the camera movement is seen in the scene.

This is the final storyboard of the music video.

REFLECTION:
The storyboard is a very important part of our project, as it directs how the video is going to be filmed, what scenes, what technical elements, etc. I recognize over the past few media projects that we tend to stray away from the written storyboards as we gain new ideas during the production process. My role was that I helped provided ideas and scenes for the storyboard, while giving advice on what to add or change. This time, our storyboard-er, Tisha, found an online storyboard website that shows clearly where the camera is, and all the surroundings. This is much more useful as we can really visualize how the filming process will go on, and it takes less drawing skills to create this type of storyboard. However, it lacks detail visually, so Tisha decided to create both the online and hand-drawn storyboard. One problem I could tell she faced was that it was too much workload for her. Doing the storyboards and actually making the blog tired her out, so she finished it only a few hours before the deadline. To solve this, she worked on the storyboard in her free periods at school to maximize productivity. Next time, maybe she could split the work with another team member so the burden on her to complete it is not too high, especially when theres a deadline.

Mood board

This is the mood board for component 3. The mood board was created by Kellie and I (Cassie), but I (Cassie) created this blog.

⋅˚₊‧ àš Music Video Mood Board à§ ‧₊˚ ⋅

What is a mood board and its purpose?

A mood board is a sort of “collage”-like arrangement of images, colors, textures, texts, etc. It is usually made to visual a certain concept, style, or aesthetic. A mood board could be used as a reference tool to gain inspirations in creative fields, or in our case, when creating and directing a music video, artist persona, social media pages, etc. It helps put everyone’s thoughts into a few or one cohesive page where we can understand the branding in just a single look. Since ideas shared audibly might be misinterpreted, a mood board ensures the vision is consistent and everyone understands it.

Application to our music video:

We plan to make a mood board for our music video to the song “POV” by Ariana Grande, where the lyrics talk about a couple in a positive manner. We created a storyline between a boy and a girl, where they carry out their dates to the song. To effectively target our target demographic and psychographic, we had to decide things such as their style, lifestyle, hobbies, etc to match up with the target audience. Creating a mood board was very necessary in order to let the actors know what to wear, what to do and how to act. Besides that, it helps my team reach a better understanding of what exactly we are making.

Below are the characters and representations Kellie and I created mood boards for, that will be features in our music video.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

1. Ellie Collins

Ellie in our music video, is a sweet and imaginative “girl next door” who loves daydreaming. She’s gets shy easily, but is always confident in her craft. She’s very artistic and enjoys things like photography, painting, doodling, and anything creative. She has an almost vintage aesthetic with modern aspects to it, this would be known as a “down town girl” aesthetic in today’s terms. She loves vintage things, such as records, vinyls and digital cameras. She also enjoys going to the park and the beach, soaking in the scenery. She’s known to be a hopeless romantic, always imagining romantic scenarios and yearning for that feeling.

2. Karl Williams

Karl in our music video, is a mysterious guy at first when Ellie and him first meet. Overtime, he warms up to her, becoming a sweet partner, often going out with Ellie and doing small gestures to make her happy. They share their passion for photography, reading, and music together, where they can spend hours together just enjoying these hobbies together. He has a more modern fashion style compared to Ellie, but he still has some hints of vintage charm. He likes to take many pictures and videos of Ellie, to capture each moment with her.

3. The Couple

This couple represents a very healthy, positive romantic relationship. Their relationship is relatively new, meaning this music video shows the first few stages in a relationship, or what we could call “the honeymoon phase”. They meet at a record cafe, where they bond over their shared passion for old music and records/vinyls. The couple is very sentimental, going to new places together while capturing each other in photographs for memories. This relationship is very sweet and wholesome, and Ellie is glad she finally can feel the emotion of love.

4. The Dates

This couple frequently goes out on dates to all sorts of places. Beaches and parks are one of the couple’s top visited places as Ellie loves to spend time there, especially with her new found lover, Karl. They also go do artistic activities together, such as photography, playing instruments, reading, etc. Thus, they bond over their shared hobbies and passions. Once again, they love going to photo booths to capture memories, especially vintage BNW ones! Where they’re going doesn’t really matter to Karl, as long as he’s with Ellie, he doesn’t mind tagging along.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

How did we create the mood board?

Firstly, to collect the images, I created a shared Pinterest board where all the members could add images or “pins” to the board for easy photo collection and to further solidify our vision and aesthetic. Pinterest is known for having higher quality, unique, and specific images compared to other image sites such as Google. I also created sections in the mood board, so it would be easier to find and reference in case we ever needed inspiration, especially for the actors who need to prepare the clothing and other mis-en-scene.

Lastly, we used Canva to create the mood board itself. Canva is a convenient editing platform that allows multiple people to work on a design at the same time. It’s beginner and user-friendly, which made it easier for us to upload and arrange the images we downloaded from Pinterest. I also happen to be very familiar with Canva as I used it often for other subjects and work. This allowed the creation process of the mood board to go by very smoothly and quickly, giving us more time to actually create the mood board blog, since we decided to do it individually.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
The mood board was very enjoyable to do, as constructing the vision of how you want the music video to look was actually very fun! My role was collecting and editing the pictures together, which was no hassle at all, and it was finished really quickly probably due to our organized Pinterest board. One problem I experienced though, was that I totally lost motivation to actually work on the blog post after the fun part (creating the mood board itself) was done. I’ve never made a mood board for a media project before, but I made countless of blog posts, that it seems like a chore to me now. A proper solution to this would be motivating myself with reminders that “If I do it now, I won’t have to do it later” and “If you do this good and on time, you’ll get a good grade” which are my main motivators that mostly work. Usually, getting a friend to accompany me while I work on blog posts also seems to trick my brain into focusing. It also helps if they act as an “accountability buddy” who can make sure I’m actually focusing on my work. Next time, I’ll remember to use my motivating techniques and maybe set up a reward system to keep me going. Specifically for mood boards though, I’ll be sure to write my ideas down on the blog post first, before I start creating the mood board.

Classwork: Cut To The Beat Editing

Here is a blog for the classwork I worked on with Maxine and Mila, two classmates from my media studies class. I contributed by watching a tutorial video incase the editor (Maxine) needed help, I helped in choosing the song and also gave feedback on editing. This blog was done by me (Cassie).

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
This blog was done by me, but most of the work was done by Maxine. My role was helping with choosing a song, providing ideas, and giving feedback. I wanted to discuss in more detail with my team members about this classwork we had to do, however our main problem was that it was quite hard to communicate. The three of us are not that close, and do not share any common group chats together so communicate had to be done separately. I was scared that with bad communication, I may miss out on important information and need to catch up on work. So, to solve this, I decided to ask Maxine about her progress and turns out she finished quickly. She sent me her presentation so I could know more about her editing process which made it easier to write this blog. Next time, I would work in a group which had easy/not awkward communication if possible, and if not, I’d create a group chat so we can all contribute something and consume the same information.

Classwork: Media Theories

Here is a classwork blog I made about the media theories I learnt for componant 3. While I studied many theories for examinations, I’ve only included theories I think will be helpful to me in my componant 3 project. This blog was done by me (Cassie).

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
My role in creating this presentation helped me understand how media builds meaning across gender, identity, industry, and audience. An example would be the theories of Judith Butler, Laura Mulvey, and Liesbet van Zoonen showed me how gender is shaped and represented in media which can give me extra insight on how to represent our main star, especially since she is a woman. Other theories like persona, branding, stardom and artist brand image showed me how identities are carefully constructed in order to appeal the audience, and will help me when I am trying to construct an identity for my star. Other theories such as Media ownership by Curran and Seation, Theory of fandom by Henry Jenkins, and end of audience by Clay Shirky were also very helpful to know how the real world media works, and let me know more about audience and industry. One problem was that even though these theories were helpful, it takes time to really understand in depth and applying the information clearly into the slides or real life. However, to solve this, I did a lot of research and managed my time pretty well in order to get it done quickly. I mostly remembered things I learnt in class because we often do note taking or active recall along with group discussions, which made things much easier. Next time, for future projects I would improve the efficiency of my researching skills and control my time to finish projects.

Classwork: Technical Elements

Here is my classwork for component 3 on the technical elements we have learn this year. This blog was done by me (Cassie).

˙ . ꒷ Technical Elements . đ–Šč˙

What are technical elements?
In my own words, technical elements in media are the tools, technique or equipment used in the production process to convey meaning, emotion or narrative to an audience. Natural Core Arts Standards defines it as “the elements of spectacle such as sets, sound, costume, lights, music, props, and makeup used to create a unified and meaningful design for a theatrical production”. There are four technical elements that we have learnt: Camera, Sound, Mis-en-scene and Edit.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

CAMERA

1. Camera Angles

Below is a presentation I made covering all the camera angles I learnt.
I also watched this video below to make sure I understood everything correctly.

2. Camera Movements

Below is a mind map that I worked on to easily memorize the camera movements.

Additionally, I watched this video to gain a better understanding of camera movements and to get a visual of how the movements are actually executed.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

SOUND

Below is a poster I made about the different types of sounds:

I watched this video from the same channel to actually listen to the sounds and get familiar with it. This channel posts detailed guides on technical elements so I find this creator quite useful.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

MIS-EN-SCENE

Mise-en-scene refers to everything placed in front of the camera within a frame. It includes all the visual elements that shape meaning and atmosphere.

Types of Mise-en-Scene:
- Setting
- Costume and Makeup
- Lighting
- Props
- Color
- Acting (performance, movement, expression)
- Composition (framing and spatial arrangement)

Once again, the video below really helped me understand mis-en-scene as a concept and helped me differentiate the types of mis-en-scene such as theatrical and naturalistic.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

EDIT

Below is a padlet board I made to compile what I’ve learnt about editing:

Since I am not the editor of the group, I only briefly learnt editing techniques and how to edit with these YouTube videos below:

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
Doing classwork on the technical elements has helped me better understand them and how they can construct meaning, especially when used together. I also learnt on how to apply them to my music video, such as the editing techniques I briefly learnt when watching the video, or figuring out which camera angle would be best for a specific scene. I ran into a little problem, where I got so bored of typing up the different technical elements, the effects, etc. One way I solved this problem was by using Canva posters and presentations. Designing something with text and graphics is way more appealing and fun to me, rather than typing up a whole blog. This method by using more creative platforms made me more motivated to finish my classwork on the technical elements. Next time, I think I’ll also apply this method when I’m creating more classwork blogs or projects, as it helps me finish it faster too. I could use the extra time to work on other blogs or give myself a little break from media work.

Decision-Making Process in Song Choice

This blog contains the decision making process in song choice, where we choose the song and research about our music video song choice. This blog was created by Tisha, while I helped in giving feedback and input about what song we will choose. I also bolded/highlighted/formatted this blog was better readability.

⋆。° Song Choice  ࿔*:・

For this music video project, as we have decided on our genre being
RnB genre we wanted to discuss our goals for this project. This is done so that our ideas are on the same page and it would be easier to create our music video by combining ideas that would connect easily. In order to have a fair decision on the song we will do, I asked all of the team member to each give a song from the RnB genre they think would be able to create a good music video.

As our team is a group of 4, from the 3 of my team member they gave suggestion on a song but I was not well known by any songs from the RnB genre so I was okay with following what the team has decided to choose. These song choices were discussed in our Whatsapp group chat (Fig 1), it shows how we all talked about our opinions and song we wanted to do.

Fig 1 - Shows our discussion about opinions from song choices

In result the song choice includes:
  • pov by Ariana Grande (2021)
  • Kill Bill by SZA (2023)
  • Folded by Kehlani (2025)
In order to find the perfect song, we decided to create a list of the pros and cons of each songs in order to be able to finalize our decision in picking the song we want to choose for this music video project. We create this pros and cons by balancing the differences from each song by watching their music video.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

PROS AND CONS

pov - Ariana Grande (2021)

For this song, based on research from google the song was published from the album in 30 October 2020 following the release of Ariana Grande's sixth album Position, making this song being released under 5 years but it was officially released by Republic Records on March 31 2021. This song is considered as a R&B song, but Ariana Grande is well known for being a Pop artist making it contain pop genre conventions, which if we were to use this song we will need to meet 2 different genre conventions added into our music video. As a group we are more familiar with the pop genre so it would be easier to make an idea on what to add in the music video, with the title being pov we had several ideas on using point of view (pov) shot throughout the song so that it would be more connected to the song. The song doesn't have an official music video and only a lyric video which contains dance choreography to the lyrics which makes the song being on the performance side. Without the music video and just the choreography it was hard to gain inspiration for what would fit in our music video.

Kill Bill - SZA (2023)

SZA is well known for making R&B songs which by watching her music video allows us to gain many inspiration for R&B genre conventions to inspire us to be added in our music video. The music video that we watched contains an inappropriate performance and for us we think that it would be really cringe if we were to use the song based on the lyrics. The lyrics of the song were awkward to be acted out, but at the same time the song tone uses a very tense emotion such as anger in singing it which would need an actor that has a more proper actor that acts professionally to play that role. The whole vibe from the song is dark and very emotional to which we think it would be hard to try and make that music video to align with the dark and emotional feeling.

Folded - Kehlani (2025)

Kehlani is also known for being a R&B artist where she is also known as a dancer which is why in this song Folded music videos are heavily focused on performance. As we use music videos to gain inspiration for our music video, with performance we believe that the performance was very overwhelming.  From the music video as well, we tried watching it multiple times but the narrative of it is quite unclear, so it will be hard to figure out a narrative that would match this song. In the music video, it is heavily leaning to the performance side which was inappropriate for our project but the idea of having performance was good to express emotions which we wanted to add.

To which after analyzing the three options pros and cons we decided to choose pov by Ariana Grande as our final song.

This decision was made because the song is easier to adapt with the resources that we have. Alongside when we were discussing the pros and cons we were able to have a clear goal on what the narrative of the music video would be if we chose the song pov by Ariana Grande. Although it doesn't have an official music video, this actually allow us to have a more creative freedom to develop our own original concept rather than getting ideas off an existing music video.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
Even though this blog was made by Tisha, I had a role to help our group in deciding the song we would use. I was the one who suggested pov by Ariana Grande in the first place, and helped in providing the pros and the cons of each song. As a previous actor in previous projects, I was thinking mostly about which song is easiest to act, especially since we don’t have access to the best actors. A problem we faced was in choosing the song, because we all suggested different things and it was hard to come to a conclusion. To solve this issue, we discussed verbally in class about all the different resources we have access to e.g. performers, actors, locations, props, time frame, etc. We compared this with our pros and cons list as well, and we decided pov would be the best choice especially with our situation. Next time, I think I would explore more song choice ideas as we were pressured to quickly choose a song even though we didn't feel ready.
