Classwork: Technical Elements

Here is my classwork for component 3 on the technical elements we have learn this year. This blog was done by me (Cassie).

What are technical elements
In my own words, technical elements in media are the tools, technique or equipment used in the production process to convey meaning, emotion or narrative to an audience. Natural Core Arts Standards defines it as “the elements of spectacle such as sets, sound, costume, lights, music, props, and makeup used to create a unified and meaningful design for a theatrical production”. There are four technical elements that we have learnt: Camera, Sound, Mis-en-scene and Edit.

CAMERA

1. Camera Angles

Below is a presentation I made covering all the camera angles I learnt.
I also watched this video below to make sure I understood everything correctly.

2. Camera Movements

Below is a mind map that I worked on to easily memorize the camera movements.

Additionally, I watched this video to gain a better understanding of camera movements and to get a visual of how the movements are actually executed.

SOUND

Below is a poster I made about the different types of sounds:

I watched this video from the same channel to actually listen to the sounds and get familiar with it. This channel posts detailed guides on technical elements so I find this creator quite useful.

MIS-EN-SCENE

Mise-en-scene refers to everything placed in front of the camera within a frame. It includes all the visual elements that shape meaning and atmosphere.

Types of Mise-en-Scene:
Setting
- Costume and Makeup
- Lighting
- Props
- Color
- Acting (performance, movement, expression)
- Composition (framing and spatial arrangement)

Once again, the video below really helped me understand mis-en-scene as a concept and helped me differentiate the types of mis-en-scene such as theatrical and naturalistic.

EDIT

Below is a padlet board I made to compile what I’ve learnt about editing:

Since I am not the editor of the group, I only briefly learnt editing techniques and how to edit with these YouTube videos below:

REFLECTION:
Doing classwork on the technical elements has helped me better understand them and how they can construct meaning, especially when used together. I also learnt on how to apply them to my music video, such as the editing techniques I briefly learnt when watching the video, or figuring out which camera angle would be best for a specific scene. I ran into a little problem, where I got so bored of typing up the different technical elements, the effects, etc. One way I solved this problem was by using Canva posters and presentations. Designing something with text and graphics is way more appealing and fun to me, rather than typing up a whole blog. This method by using more creative platforms made me more motivated to finish my classwork on the technical elements. Next time, I think I’ll also apply this method when I’m creating more classwork blogs or projects, as it helps me finish it faster too. I could use the extra time to work on other blogs or give myself a little break from media work.
