Classwork: Clapperboard

This blog contains a short understanding of what a clapperboard is and how we use it in our music video project for component 3. This blog was created by Tisha, but I helped in bolding/highlighting words for easier reading, as well as always being the person to hold/mark the clapper board for scenes along with Kimora.

✧。Clapperboard ✧*。

In class, my teacher has given a suggestion on buying a clapperboard in order to help with editing much more easier. As before I had to look through each video to find the right video and it took a lot of time. At first, I thought it was an item that is just for visuals only but it turns out it was useful.

I decided, to research myself about what a clapperboard is, how it is use, and what is the purpose of having a clapperboard in creating a video project. I decided to research by watching a youtube video.

The video explains a brief explanation of what clapperboard is and how films use them.

To show my understanding of the video, I created a summary below about clapperboards.

What is a clapperboard?
Clapperboard is a flat board that contains information about a scene which includes scene number, roll, take, shot, and date. At the top it includes a hinged that when it is close it makes a clap sound.

How to use a clapperboard?
In order to use a clapperboard, the clapperboard needs to fill in the full frame being needed to hold in front of the camera. The details on the clapperboard is mainly important which includes details about the:
  • Production title
  • Scene number
  • Shot number
  • Take number
Even with the details already on the clapperboard, the scene number and take number will be called out by the person who is holding the clapperboard while closing the board shut to make the clap sound. Then the clapperboard is removed from the camera in order for the shoot to start / continue.

What is the purpose of a clapperboard?
The purpose of a clapperboard in general is to help organize footage that makes it helpful during editing. As the clapperboard is shown in front of the camera and filling the whole frame, when the footage is placed in a storage application such as Google Drive, the thumbnail of the raw footage will have the clapperboard. With this, it makes it easier to identify what footage it is.

Another purpose of having a clapperboard is the hinged top. The hinged top creates a clap sound, because of this sound it will create a spike waveform. With this spike it will be much more easier for editor to match the sound if it was recorded on a separate devices such as a boom mics.

USING CLAPBOARDS

With my understanding about clapperboard through my research, I wanted to apply them into my project. Below will be a presentation that I created about my process in using a clapperboard.
Applying my knowledge of clapperboards by Jyotisha

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
Even though Tisha wrote this blog, I still had a role in it. In this confusing task, my role was to understand and apply the use of a clapperboard to improve our filming, organizing and editing process. At first, the problem was that I underestimated its importance and found it confusing to use it correctly, especially remembering to include all the necessary details as we tend to forget. The main problem was actually how the clapperboard we bought did not allow any writing on it, which defeated the whole purpose of a clapperboard. To solve these challenges, my group researched how clapperboards work and practiced using them during filming over and over again, which helped me see how useful they are for organizing footage and syncing audio, especially since we have lots of lip syncing scenes that need to be matched up. To solve the clapperboard issue, as mentioned in the blog, we used our fingers instead to show which shot number it was. Next time, I would ensure the clapperboard is used consistently in every shot by setting reminders so we don’t forget. I would also ensure that before buying a clapperboard, the material is actually writable.

Classwork: Theory of Stardom

This is my classwork for component 3 about the theory stardom by Richard Dyer. This will help me in constructing a star for my music promotional package. This blog was done by me (Cassie).

‧˚꒰ Theory of Stardom ꒱ ₊˚⋆

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
Working on the classwork post about the theory of stardom helped me understand how a music artist is not just defined by their music, but by a carefully constructed image that is shaped through media representation. This was especially useful for my music video project, as I am creating a made-up artist and needed to think deliberately about how their star image would be presented to the audience. One problem was that while Ariana Grande has many scandals, none of them caused a huge downfall. Ariana Grande remains very popular no matter what she does, even through her countless scandals. To solve it, I just researched her “mini-downfalls”and analyzed the impact they had on her career. Though it’s not career ending, it still got her some backlash and made her lose fans. Next time, I would research a wider range of artists from different genres and eras to avoid over-reliance on one star which was Ariana Grande in this case. This would help me get more inspiration to create a more unique and well-rounded star image and strengthen my understanding of how stardom is constructed across different media contexts because not all stars share the same story. Maybe next time, researching stars with downfalls would be more beneficial to me, but I choose Ariana Grande because she is the original singer of the song we chose.

Behind the Scenes

Here is the behind the scenes of component 3 that show the process of our production. This was made by Tisha, Kimora, Kellie and I (Cassie).

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
Working on the behinds the scenes part of my project allowed me to see the whole production process. In past projects, I’ve always been the main actor, so it was a new experience to be apart of the filming crew. My role is I usually gave insights to the camera man, took behind the scenes pictures, took pictures for our artist’s instagram, and acted as background or secondary actors. The main problem when creating this blog post was the random scenes Kellie and Karl filmed, as they couldn’t really take too many BTS-esque pictures. We also simply did not really put too much effort into those spontaneous scenes, so we couldn’t really explain the process behind it. The solution we thought off was using phone accessories and equipment such as octobuddies (suction tool that allows phones to be stuck onto a surface), tripods, pop sockets, etc. This allows Kellie and Karl to film from afar without them actually holding the phone, making it look like we have a camera man, and allowing them to document their process. Next time, I would ask Kellie and Karl to ask someone around them to assist them in taking at least a few of their shots, so there is at least a larger variety of footage and there would be more behind the scenes pictures.

Filming Schedule

Here is the filming schedule for component 3 which shows the plan or when, where, who will film on our appointment. It also contains information of equipment we may need. This was made by me (Cassie), and my other members also helped.

REFLECTION:
This filming schedule will remind us when we need to film. It’s crucial we plan this in advanced so we don’t end up procrastinating it and have to film everything last minute at the end of the project timeline. I decided to create this short, simple, yet straight to the point filming schedule just to keep track of when we would have to film. I also added Kellie and Karl’s unplanned filming sessions here so we could keep track of the individual scenes. One problem we faced is that Kellie was going abroad from December 13th to January 13th. This meant we could not film for the entirety of our winter holiday from school. This made it very difficult for me to find times for us to film, especially since everyone was busy with school, exams, internships, etc. The solution we thought of was filming much in advanced as soon as our storyboard was finished. By filming way before all the other groups in our class, we could make the most of our limited time together, while still being in the same phase when we arrive back at school. We also let Kellie and Karl film footage of their dates when possible so we have extra clips to use if we ever needed it. When Kellie arrives back in Indonesia, we plan to film the rest of the scenes swiftly so we can move on to editing. Next time, maybe I would film more over the days we had left and managed my time better so we could squeeze in more filming sessions so we wouldn’t have to stress too much about it when we’re back to school.

Pre-production: Screen Test

This is the screen test for component 3. This screen test was filmed on my device, and everyone contributed in filming it, while Kimora edited it, and Tisha uploaded it onto Youtube. This blog post was done by me (Cassie).

⋆.˚ Screen Test ⋆ ✴︎˚

Cassie’s Media Dictionary 📖 𓂃🪶

Definitions by Oxford Languages

Screen Test
/ˈskrēn ˌtest/

noun
a filmed test to ascertain whether an actor is suitable for a movie role.

Why did we create a screen test?

My team and I decided to create a screen test so we can tell who would play the roles of our main characters best. We needed someone who was confident and comfortable on camera, especially when filming affectionate scenes since our music video contains themes of love. Doing this will help us avoid actor-related problems in the future such as an actor having a different vibe than what we are looking for, or an actor’s delivery not being as good as we wanted. By doing a screen test, we hope to find someone with good star quality who can execute our vision properly. Additionally

Our Process

First, we sectioned the lyrics and decided one person would lip sync one section. Once that was done, we first filmed ourselves as we may be possible candidates. Then, during free periods or after school, we looked around for people who were willing to be our actors. We gave them limited instructions: just lip sync to the song/say this line and the rest is up to you. So, body language, delivery, and other factors was purely up to the actor. We decided on this method to allow the actor to have creative freedom over their interpretation of the song, and to see if a person truly fits our vision. After filming enough people, I put all the clips from my device in shared google drive, where Kimora edited it on CapCut. Tisha then uploaded it on Youtube.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

Screen Test #1 - Our Artist

We already had a vision of what kind of actor we were looking for. We wanted an actor that:
✔️ Is female, around 16-18 years old
✔️ Is confident and not camera-shy
✔️ Has charisma and star quality
✔️ Will match the aesthetic we planned
✔️ Is comfortable with love scenes that require close contact

From here, we eliminated those who felt shy or awkward in front of the camera as it would make working with them very difficult. While some were confident and fine with the camera, they didn’t have the emotional and soft energy that matched the song, leading to their elimination. After careful consideration, from our candidates (except the boys, we did that for the laughs), we all agreed and decided on actor #3, which was Kellie, our teammate.

FINAL CHOICE
Kellie was confident on camera, yet was able to interpret the song in the way we had imagined. She often posts lip syncing videos on her TikTok, so we weren’t surprised that she easily picked up the lyrics and was “feeling” the music. She used natural facial expressions and body language which highlighted her charisma, and made her look like a real artist. Additionally, she was comfortable with acting in a couple. Kellie embodied we envisioned, which is why we finalized our actor. Kellie happily agreed to be an actor for our music video, so we started planning the next steps.

Screen Test #2 - The Love Interest

After deciding our main star, we now had to decide the actor for her love interest.  We wanted someone that:
✔️ Is male, around 16-18 years old as well
✔️ Is confident and comfortable on camera
✔️ Is comfortable with love scenes that require close contact
✔️ Can act naturally/happily with Kellie

First, we eliminated actors who aren’t comfortable with acting out love scenes because they’re already in relationships. We also analyzed if they delivered the line naturally in a friendly tone, while showing confidence. We eliminated those who seemed camera shy, as it would make their acting stiff, thus making the relationship in our music video seem unnatural, one-sided or made up. Overall, after discussions with my team and Kellie herself, we decided on actor #4, Karl. Based on delivery alone, we felt like Karl had the best interpretation and performance. Karl is Kellie’s close guy friend (now boyfriend!), meaning he is already comfortable being around Kellie which will make filming less awkward. Another advantage is that their chemistry should be better as well since they’re already close friends, meaning an on-screen relationship would look real and natural. Because of this, we decided to not do an additional chemistry test.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
This screen test was actually quite fun to do as we had to walk around and find people we think would be suitable. My role was that I was collecting all the footage on my Ipad, and I was the main camera man present in the whole recording process. We were actually not expecting a lot of people to actually participate, but surprisingly more people participated than me thought. We originally wanted to record the first few verses and the chorus only in our main star screen test, because we thought we couldn’t convince people to join our screen test/be a possible actor. However, since we had more people available to film, we decided to film the whole song. One problem was that this meant we had to find more people, and it was really difficult since we filmed this around the time students usually go home, meaning less and less students were available. We already had some good candidates in mind, so our priority was actually just finding the remaining people to finish the song on our screen test (Who knows, we might find unexpected talents!). One solution was that we just started acting people, even though they did not match our criteria (hence the two boys), or asked people to do 2 verses. This was not the most effective solution as it did not broaden our candidate pool but at least it allowed us to finish the video, as it would be weird to cut it off mid song. For the boys screen test, it was relatively easy and we just asked boys who we thought matched the criteria. To be honest, once we picked Kellie, Karl was the obvious choice due to his circumstances and situation with Kellie, so we did not debate much about the pick for the love interest. Next time, maybe I wouldn’t prioritize having the screen test done in a single day, and I’d just wait til the next school day to film other possible candidates instead of just repeating people or inviting people that do not match the criteria.

Internship

This is a blog explaining my internship experience in media, marketing and communications and how that has helped me gain skills and learn new things to prepare me for component 3’s production. This blog was written by me (Cassie).

꒰ྀི১ Internship ໒꒱ིྀ

My school holds an internship program every year where students must intern for at least 40 hours. This allows the students to gain real work experience and build their CVs for university applications. However, I saw this as an opportunity to expand my skills in media studies and marketing for component 3 and future projects as well. So, I started looking for opportunities in media and communications -related positions.

In December 2025, I interned at Double Six Luxury Hotel as a Marketing Intern, focusing more on social media marketing. Here were the tasks I was asked to carry out throughout my internship:

❀  Creating mood boards and social media feed arrangements
❀  Sourcing photos from DropBox
❀  Writing engaging captions for social media posts
❀  Filming videos of the hotel's facilities
❀  Editing and creating content for social media reels

Mood Board & Feed Arrangements
I was tasked with things such as creating mood boards and possible feed arrangements across their social media accounts, which I found beneficial for creative expression and works as a practice for our social media development. During this time, I was able to see the general brand image of each sister company the hotel had (e.g. other hotels, restaurants, spas, etc), and I made multiple mood boards of each company to get an idea on the aesthetic and vibes of the businesses. During the production phase in component 3, I’ll make sure to make a mood board to grasp the concept we will use and refer to it if we ever get lost/stray to far from the plan. I will also use my experience in creating feed arrangements for social media to help make a comprehensive social media page that looks visually appealing and aligns with our brand. Below are the mood boards and feed arrangements I made during my internship.

Photo Sourcing from DropBox
I often browsed through pictures of the hotel's facilities in DropBox, which also helped me again an artistic eye in terms of photography and photo composition which will come in handy when we are taking pictures for the digipak and social media. One thing I enjoyed while using DropBox was that photos were all stored and organized neatly in one app with many named folders/classifications, which made photos easy to find. This significantly made my job easier and quicker to do, and I hope my group can create an easy resourcing-finding system too. Since DropBox isn’t commonly used, we may opt into using apps we may already have, such as Google Drive, as it has similar features for easy organization. Seeing so many professionally-taken pictures has inspired me to take similar photos for my digipak, especially when I see candid photos being taken of “guests” or models. I’ll definitely keep it in mind when we start taking photos for the digipak’s development.

Caption Writing
I also created engaging captions across multiple social media pages, both on Instagram and Facebook, which can prepare me when my group tries to create meaning for my artist through the social media post captions. I realized that certain types of captions can attract different emotional responses from audiences e.g. a caption including a playful question will attract many commenters. I will share this knowledge to the member working on social media if it is not me, as captions are still an important part of audience interaction and also generates meaning which can support our dominant reading/our star’s persona. Another thing I have learnt is that AI is often used in writing captions for businesses, and this may have become an industry standard. I aim to create my own engaging captions that have real human-intended meaning behind them, without the use of AI, in my component 3 project. Below is a post I made for one of the sister companies of Double-Six Luxury Hotel, called Blu-Zea Resort by Double-Six, using my own captions writing.

Filming
I also often went to different areas within the hotels/traveled to the sister hotels of the company I interned at for filming purposes, which let me express my ideas creatively without limits, as my internship supervisor let me use my own filming techniques and knowledge. I found that my filming skills improved as it allowed me to put my pre-existing knowledge into practice. As someone with limited experience in that area, because I usually act as an actor during media projects, it was helpful to experiment with the camera to find out what works and what doesn’t. However, this opportunity allowed me to fix filming mistakes I often make such as rigid and shaky movements, my fingers entering the frame, and overall bad blocking/framing. Now, I feel more comfortable being a camera man for future projects. I’m not sure if I will work as a camera man in component 3, however I will be happy and confident to substitute if our actual designated cameraman is unavailable.

Editing
Lastly, I edited and created content for social media. I was quite nervous about this as I've never edited a whole project on my own, however it allowed me to explore CapCut as a whole and experiment with the different features. I felt like I was able to apply my new-found knowledge practically and improve my editing skills, and could assist the editor in my media team if she ever needed help. I tried out color grading, messing around with audios and beats, used logos and overlays, and many more. However, since a social media post (more specifically for Instagram) or reel is usually very short and simple, I did not have the chance to try more editing styles that would not suit content for a luxury hotel. On the bright side, I was proud I could finally edit a project on my own while getting compliments from my internship supervisor. The Canva file below contains two videos I created for Double-Six and Blu-Zea entirely on my own.

REFLECTION:
My internship was overwhelming at first as I needed to adapt to new people and environment and suffer with long working hours. My role made me responsible for tasks such as developing mood boards and planning potential feed layouts across their social media platforms, and many more as mentioned on the blog. This was all very useful for preparation for my media project. However, a problem I faced was that sometimes I felt confused when searching for songs for the video content I made as I want to make sure that the video fits with the brand guidelines. As a new intern, I was not 100% aware of the brand image and needed time to soak it in. A solution I thought of was that I asked my supervisor for help or I checked the previous videos from the company to get inspiration for the song. Next time, If I had another internship, I would definitely be ready and confident to ask questions, as I regret feeling shy and holding myself back. Being more social could’ve allowed me to get more connections and insights from professionals which would have possibly improved my project.

Classwork: Shooting + Performance Practice

This is the shooting and performance practice blog for component 3 discussing our process and how this helped us. I (Cassie) performed and edited, Tisha and Kimora filmed. This blog was written by me (Cassie).

My group and I decided to practice our shooting and filming, specifically during performances since we had practiced how to film narrative scenes before in our first project (find out more on our summary of last project blog). Through our research on RNB songs such as Folded by Kehlani and Good Days by SZA, we found out that a large portion of RNB music uses performances in the majority of their music videos, whether that is lip-syncing or dancing. In order to create a music video that is dynamic and balances how much it conforms and subverts from RNB conventions, we felt as if practicing how to shoot and perform a music video or performance video would be beneficial. Music videos must hook the audience and keep them engaged throughout the whole song, and by doing this practice, we can learn how to create engaging shots to make our final video more interesting. Additionally, this can help us become more comfortable with filming and performing/acting throughout our process.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

THE PROJECT

Me (Cassie) and some friends have been preparing a dance performance for a school event. I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn how to shoot this kind of dancing performance just in case we decided to have a performance-heavy video, especially in dancing since we had already memorized the choreography and blocking.

Me and my friends performed to Boy With Luv by BTS. Even though it is a K-Pop song and not RNB, I thought that the dance and performance styles are not drastically different (from a dancer's view). From a media view, I had to make sure that filming techniques between the two genres aren't too different. So, I decided to briefly research and compare the two, by watching the Boy With Luv music video, Boy With Luv performance video, and also the Folded Music Video. These videos are linked below:

Boy With Luv - BTS MV

Boy With Luv - BTS Performance Video

Folded - Kehlani MV

The main difference I found was that the Boy With Luv music videos had many different scenes and outfits which made the music videos more dynamic in general, and they included other performances such as lip-syncing and acting, meaning the choreography was not especially highlighted. They also had more narrative/story scenes.

The Boy With Luv performance video shows an actual performance by BTS to a crowd, meaning they focused more on the choreography and vocals of the performance. It's often shot in one take (or with minimal cuts), using different camera movements and angles to make it more dynamic. This is similar to one take style music videos like Justin Bieber's "Beauty and a Beat" or Ravyn Lenae's "Love Me Not".

Lastly, the Folded music video had little narrative and showed more of the dance, using multiple angles and a mix of lip-syncing to make the video more engaging. I ultimately determined the differences were not too significant and decided to continue with this shooting practice.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

OUR PROCESS

Personally, I (Cassie) have experience in dancing as a dancer, along with facial expressions usually used in dancing. Kellie usually posts lip-syncing videos onto her TikTok, so she had some experience in that sense. Tisha and Kimora are more familiar with filming itself, since they often shot scenes for past projects. So, we decided to split our roles.

❀ Cassie - Dancer/Performer along with her friends
❀  Tisha/Kim - Cameramen
❀  Kellie - Unfortunately she was unable to join due to conflicting schedules

First, we all watched the 3 videos together to get an idea of what to expect and how to film performances. I also took note on how the dancers lip-synced and made facial expressions to enhance their performance. Then, my friends and I decided to practice the choreography a few times, so we can make sure we remember it and so Tisha and Kim can familiarize themselves with our dance and positions. Finally, we decided to film it.

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

Benefits
Limitations
Allowed us to practice filming performance scenes with many different camera movements/angles which can help improve performance filming in our music video if there is any
We did not have access to multiple cameras as we only had one phone with sufficient storage for filming, meaning we did not take videos from multiple angles to make a more dynamic video, and could only do a one-take continuous video as it’s hard to dance with many cuts
Helps us become more comfortable performing, and allows us to gain more knowledge on how to do a dance performance to create specific meaning if needed in our music video
If we decide to not have many performance scenes, especially dancing, our practice will not be as useful as anticipated
Allows us to create a good RNB style dance scene if needed, which can help us conform to conventions and make our video more recognizably RNB
Minimal editing was used for this one-take video, meaning we didn’t get to practice too many editing techniques

⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔ ꒰ ᧔ෆ᧓ ꒱ ⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔⏔

REFLECTION:
For this mini project, my role was to perform as a dancer, edit the video with basic techniques and of course researching the videos, as well as writing this blog for my teammates. I feel like I understood how I wanted the video to be like the most, as it was my idea and I did most of the detailed research. That was why I was originally planning to film the video. This is where our main problem comes from: one of the dancers suddenly couldn’t make it, which forced me to substitute for him as I was one of the people teaching them the dance. However, this was difficult for me as I had to memorize his positions in a short span of time as the studio we rented was about to close. So, I wasn’t able to work as a camera man. While dancing, I had too much on my mind such as thinking about where my next position is, which caused me to make some mistakes and not focus too much on facial expressions and stage presence. However, to solve this, I quickly watched a video of the group performing and memorized my positions immediately. Since I’m quite used to learning and memorizing dances/positions in my fast paced practices, I was able to adapt and pick up everything quickly. To solve the other problem, I told Tisha and Kimora exactly how I wanted the video to be and showed them the examples above. While I did make some tiny mistakes in the positioning and choreography due to overstimulation, I was able to carry out the performance quite well and I was also very satisfied with Tisha’s and Kimora’s camerawork. Next time, I would use multiple angles (have two cameras recording) for a more dynamic video including more cuts to really make use of our opportunity and practice cross-cutting and continuity editing.
